07 Oct Creative Ideas for Displaying Family Photos in Your Home
This is part two of our five-part blog series focusing on small spaces, written by d2e design consultant, Jillian Moskovitz, who was recognized as Best of Philly 2025 Small-Space Problem Solver.
Powder rooms are the quintessential small space and it’s well known that they are the perfect spot to be a little more daring in your designs. I often recommend wallpaper in a powder room since it’s a way to bring some color and personality without feeling like it’s an enormous commitment. Clients often find freedom in this small space and add wallpapers that truly make them happy.
I did the same in my own home. Years ago, I found a wallpaper filled with empty picture frames and thought it would be cool to add real photos to the “frames”. The wallpaper went up, life got busy, and the wallpaper stayed just like that for years. It was fine as it was, but then one day during the pandemic, I came across a pile of photos, and started taping them onto the wallpaper and into the “frames”.

What started with a few photos is now an ever-growing collection. Every few months, I add to the mix. The photos are all of our immediate family. Most are photos of our kids but my husband and I met when we were 2 years old and our nursery school photo and prom photos are part of the mix too!

Our photo gallery in the powder room feels especially bold since we don’t have many family photos hanging elsewhere in the house. Instead, our walls are simple, with a few pieces of larger art or mirrors. The contrast between the powder room walls and the rest of the house makes it seem like an even bolder statement. I used painters tape to attach all the photos so they are easily removable, but so far I haven’t removed a single one. Instead of taking any down, I just keep adding to it! It’s fun to have a gallery wall that can grow and change with you through the years.
Where do you keep your family photos — in common spaces or private rooms? Do you like yours posed or candid? We’d love to see your favorite way to show off your favorite people.
