Pantone Color of the Year 2018 Ultra Violet

Pantone color of the Year 2018: Ultra Violet

Everyone who knows me knows I love me some purple. Whether it’s my front door announcing “Hello!   You’ve reached the interior designer’s house,” or my petite pet portraits, dashes of purple are a judiciously-used but vibrant part of my home’s interior design.   I love that the color is associated with imagination, and feels a little non-conformist.

Which is why I was so happy to learn that “Ultra Violet” is Pantone’s 2018 Color of the year.   For those of you who maybe haven’t heard of Pantone, they are a company that provides ” technology for the selection and accurate communication of color across a variety of industries,” including interior design. In their words, Ultra Violet is “spell-binding and steeped in spirituality.”  Check more at Pantone.

But in the words of our very own Jillian Moskovitz, one of Down2Earth Interior Design’s amazing decorating consultants, “Pantone’s new color of the year, Ultra Violet, is a fun and playful color that can be a bright pop in an otherwise neutral room. Best paired with cooler colors like gray and navy, a color this intense is perfect for accents in a room — in artwork, throw pillows or accessories.”

Jillian was interviewed by the Philadelphia Inquirer and asked to weigh in on how we use Ultra Violet in our interior design projects. The Inquirer piece (click here to read) also talks about Ultra Violet’s prevalence in cosmetics, super-foods, and branding for social causes.

For our part, I’m happy to say that my love of purple put Down2Earth Interior Design ahead of the curve on this one.   This past year, we had the privilege to design an updated look for the dining hall of a sorority at the University of Pennsylvania.   Located in the basement, this room got very little natural light.   An overall neutral palette created the most soothing environment, but the client and I determined that a pop of color was really needed somewhere in the room.   Enter purple glass subway tile at the coffee station and serving bar. (Tile source, click here.)   Paired with farmhouse sconces at the bar, the tile creates a fun-meets-homey eating environment for these young women at their home away from home.

We also used pops of Ultra Violet upholstery on the dining chairs.   The upholstery material has a bit of a texture to it that implies fabric, but it is actually made of vinyl to clean up beautifully. (Fabric source, click here.)
