Sunroom Inspiration, Part 1

With limited travel options available during the pandemic, everyone is spending lots more time at home.   Many are even looking for ways to incorporate interior design elements from their favorite destinations into their spaces:  this lets you feel like you’re traveling, even when you’re not.  With that, we bring you the first of a series of “top ten” posts that will focus on creating a sunny haven inspired by Mexico.  This post has grown out of my own personal quarantine design dream: to create an interior scheme for my sunroom that captures the color, joy and exuberance of those brilliant indoor/outdoor spaces you find in Mexico.

Our sunroom is filled with sunshine, and sunshine makes my kids think of two beach vacations we took to Cancun.  Since we can’t take them there, or anywhere, anytime soon, I decided to bring a little bit of Mexico home, and started researching some interiors that embrace the colors and textiles I associate with Mexico.

Surrounded by uninsulated glass on three sides, my sunroom bakes in the summer and is an icebox in the winter.   But the spring and fall are lovely in there, and the real deterrent that has kept me from using it more is that the only function it supported, to date, was to sit.   When do I do that?   Cue 2020.

This is the year of the zoom call, as nobody can deny.   Family members are on multiple zoom calls at once in my house, as I’m sure they are in yours.  Our sunroom has doors that can close, and a beautiful backdrop, making it an ideal place for zoom calls.  In addition, when work slowed down in April, I took up two quarantine hobbies that involved sitting:  learning to knit and attempting to learn a new language.   (I have taken to the former and, at least for now, given up on the latter).

Yes, it’s true that my sunroom has recently gotten much more use than ever before, and I hope you’ll stay tuned for the next post in this series where I share some of my moodboards for the room and the products that I have been researching throughout the interior design process.
