MARVIN ROAD, ELKINS PARK
This kitchen is the ultimate example of beauty meeting function. Extreme care was taken to choose finishes that are both timeless and unique. The cherry cabinets are custom-made and feature hand-forged iron hardware. The green quartzite countertops are a rare find and continue the feel of the outdoor greenery into the kitchen. The backsplash is tiled in a mix of square and rectangular tiles in a large, non-repeating pattern that required meticulous design drawings and true attention to detail by the tile installer. And for the icing on the cake, stained glass mini pendant lights by Friend of All add some color and sparkle. In addition to the gorgeous finishes, we also maximized the storage in clever ways. A radiator is concealed in the base of a bookshelf and blends with the base kitchen cabinets. And, most importantly, an existing set of arched double doors was equipped with frosted glass and shelving to create a pantry that is huge, functional, and eye-catching. We love retaining unique architectural features of a home and rethinking them so that they serve modern needs.
Upstairs, we created a combined bathroom and laundry room from what was originally a small bathroom and a couple of closets. More modern houses often feature upstairs laundry rooms, and through this reconfiguration, we were able to add this modern convenience to a house from the 1930’s. Similar to the arched doors in the kitchen, the opening to this space was arched as well, and were able to retain that feature and still get privacy by adding a sliding barn door across the opening.
